11/14/08: We are doing wonderfully. Calvin has become a terrific member of our family and we are so happy with the relationship he has
with our daughter Melissa. We can tell already they are going to be best friends - and get into lots of trouble together! We are also
pleased with how quickly he is taking to obedience training. Puppy class is less fruitful than we had hoped, but I have been working with
him pretty extensively on the basics at home. We've also enrolled him in "Obedience 101" beginning December 1. They have a ton to
offer, including a pretty impressive agility course. For now, Calvin will be doubling up on class for the next few weeks. They also have
classes for Therapy Dog training, which is our ultimate goal for Calvin. HE'S BEAUTIFUL!!! And so smart. He has a stable, friendly and
outgoing temperament. Not to say he doesn't get his puppy bursts of "wild animal" energy, but those are few and far between now. We've
really grown to love and appreciate him so quickly. And to watch Melissa grow up with him will be the greatest joy of all. Hope all is well
you and your family. Talk to you soon.
9/10/08: He’s been wonderful so far. The first week was ROUGH, but after that, we all settled into a routine. When we see bursts of his
wild tornado terror moments, we have to remind ourselves that he’s still a puppy. And more importantly, Calvin is telling us what he
needs when he acts up – like to go romp outside, or just have someone (anyone) rub his belly. Once we finally got back to CT (the
following Thursday after we picked him up), he was into EVERYTHING – mulch, sticks, the metal legs of our outdoor fire pit, our slate
patio (which he licked and licked and licked) – we could not keep up with him. We finally decided to step his exercise up, and take him on
long walks. That absolutely did the trick and helped him to burn off some of his excess energy. Our sense is that he will take really well to
obedience training – he is quite smart. The hardest command for any dog to understand is come, and Calvin is very good about coming
when called. He just does not stray from our side. Granted, he’ll intentionally get far enough away to allow himself to get into a little
trouble, but he never really strays far. Even up here, we are comfortable enough with him to let him walk off lead while on the “Stowe Quiet
Path”, which is basically where all the locals take their dogs and NO ONE uses a leash. It’s really amazing to see how dog friendly this
town is. And that’s a big reason why we love it here. Getting back to Calvin, he is blending into the family pack just wonderfully. He
shows strong signs of loyalty and devotion to his family – especially to me. With the exception of swiping the occasional blanket or rattle,
Calvin admires Melissa from a safe distance and is never overly curious. We have every reason to believe they will grow to love each
other, just like true siblings. His bond to the family became so clear to Michelle and me up here. It makes us so happy to see how happy
Calvin is to be with us on walks. When we get back, I’ll send you a picture of Calvin trotting along side us with a cob of unhusked corn in
his mouth – so proud of himself and loving his life!!! Again, sorry we took so long to write. Hope all is well with you. Talk to you soon!
